Opening in Kidspace on March 29, Boxed Sets: Assembling Objects, Images, and People. This cooperative exhibit features three artists-Lisa Nilsson, Laura Christensen and Debora Coombs, whose assemblage and stained glass artwork will be shown alongside new work that they will create with local students. “Boxed Sets” will feature art that relies on boxes and grid-like containers, which are used to form compelling, intricate and colorful designs as well as narratives using glass, found objects, and images. The new exhibition, “Contemporary Letterpress,” an exhibition highlighting the history and process of letterpress and featuring contemporary work from around the United States; will open on Thursday, March 29 at MCLA Gallery 51. The public is invited to attend an opening reception, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., when local printer Neil Giroux will give a letterpress demonstration at 6 p.m. The gallery is at 51 Main St., North Adams. The “Truth behind Fiction” Film Series wraps up this Thursday, March 29 with “Favela Rising”. This film, called a “daring and emotional documentary,” by the Hollywood Reporter, will play in MASS MoCA’s Club B-10 at 8:00 PM. The documentary focuses on the story of Anderson Sá, who founded a nonviolent movement towards hope through music with the Afro-Reggae Band. Director Jeff Zimbalist joins the audience for a Q&A after the film. Call 662.2111.

Laura Yang, a visiting scholar at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, will discuss “China – A Culture and Economy in Transition,” on Friday, March 30th at 3:00 PM on campus in Murdock Hall, room 218. The event is free and open to the community.

The Northern Berkshire Girls Softball League, a program of the Northern Berkshire YMCA is holding spring signups. Registration will be open through March 31, 2007. The free “Movies for Kids “series at Western Gateway Heritage State Park continues with “Happy Feet,” this Saturday March 31 at the Visitors Center at 2:00 PM. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Donations will be accepted for Military Family Support Group, whose goal is to send some cheer to service personnel in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo. Williamstown artists Frank Jackson and Linda Schwalen will present a joint show titled “Small Work” at the Eclipse Mill Gallery, 243 Union Street. Main Street Stage needs a thorough Spring Cleaning and so a work day has been scheduled on Sunday, April 1 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If as many of people as possible show up, the work will go quickly, and if everyone brings a bag of chips, some dip, a casserole, or maybe some home-made brownies or a bottle of pop, a good time will be had by all. The Northern Berkshire Community Coalition is accepting nominations for the Spring Community Recognition celebration, which will be held at 5:00 PM on April 24th at Congregation Beth Israel Synagogue on Lois Street. Area residents are asked to consider nominating people of all ages who have performed acts of kindness or made a positive difference in their lives, in their neighborhoods or in their community.
