The 2% SOLUTION

January 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30TH
LIVE 8PM EASTERN & ARCHIVED
1 HOUR LONG
VIEW ON EARTH DAY TV2% Solution

Focus the Nation will stream a free, live, interactive webcast called The 2% SOLUTION. Join Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins and green jobs pioneer Van Jones and youth climate leaders, for a discussion of global warming solutions. Audiences can weigh in with cell phone voting. The goal is 10,000 screenings—and a change in the course of history.

Produced with the support of the National Wildlife federation, and hosted on Earth Day Network TV, the webcast will be broadcast live from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Americans understand that global warming is real, and here now. They are ready for this serious discussion of how to solve it, and at the same time, revitalize our communities and our economy.
Why the title?

To hold global warming to the low end of 3-4 degrees F will require cuts in global warming pollution in the developed countries by more than 80% below current levels by 2050. Put another way, we need to cut roughly 2% of current emission levels a year for the next forty years. The webcast will revolve around the question: can we as a nation get on to this path, and cut global warming pollution 2% a year for the next decade? If so, what would it take?

We are holding the event at MCLA’s Church Street Center, in the Social Hall. Doors will open at 7:30pm. In the spirit of this event we ask that you follow the Leave No Trace philosophy ‘Pack It In, Pack It Out’ for refreshments. In other words, you can bring it in, but please take it out.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

“Put another way, we need to cut roughly 2% of current emission levels a year for the next forty years. “- I believe that this is achievable by weaning the construction industry off of cement (one of the largest single produces of CO2 due to energy requirement and the sublimation process) in favour of modern synthetic alternatives.

It is a good presentation for those who think they have to spend a couple years in environmental classes to understand this issue. Global warming is not a scientific or economic issue, it is a human rights issue, it is a moral issue, in reality it is a NON-issue because, regardless of how you feel about it, the way we deal with global warming will define our generation.
As for eliminating traditional cement from industrial uses, this will only result out of pressure from grassroots change. And i dont mean marching in front of congress or a cement factory, but by CHANGING OUR OWN BEHAVIORS to pressure bigger changes like eliminating cement.
RIght now, the majority of our industrial processes go through whats called “Heat, Beat, and Treat”. This is a linear system that uses resources inefficiently and amplifies waste. For example: 1L of Coke requires 2L of Water and then pollutes the air and water supply (see India).

The central premise of the 2% solution is that we start small now (something like .01%) and with the gradual paradigm shift in society we can initiate change that will, by 2050, average to about 2%/year.
