On Tuesday, March 4th, MCLA’s Susan B. Anthony Women’s Center presented a panel discussion called “Stereotalk.” This event featured students and faculty discussing how stereotypes are used to dis and dismiss. If you missed it, you can view the slideshow by clicking on the image below. Event organizer and panelist Raechel Doughty had this to say about the topic:
“Talking about stereotypes and language is important to me because language shapes our perception of reality. Even when we’re ‘just kidding’, we’re normalizing dehumanization. I don’t think of it as being ‘politically correct’- I think of it as a matter of respect. You never know when you walk into a room who there has known someone or have themselves experienced harrassment or violence. When it comes time to register for fall classes, I encourage everyone to try out a Women’s Studies course, or another course dealing with social justice. They’re valuable no matter what field you’re in, and can alter your perception in a very positive way.”
